There were a few Monday morning oh-dark thirty hook-ups at the Oak Orchard Rivermouth. What more could you ask for for small area trib action!? The first will be a 1 day event July 10th. Flows in the Oak are one click less then medium or what you might call somewhere in between moderate and medium. Expect daily water level fluctuations this time of the year because of leaf fall and wind. Otherwise its a little tough to report on average fishing conditions. Action has been a little more measured then say 2 3 weeks ago when it seemed we got a small run of fresh steelhead. For now that is, until any more bigger rains or snows may come. From 9-mile point to the high rocks has been the most consistent producer for a lot of boats; as well as in front of the Salmon River. Some days guys seem to do OK and other days are slower. Flows in the other area smaller tribs are low and mostly clear with some icey conditions. There could be fresh steelhead, fresh silver browns or drop back fish. Flows likely to remain up and stained at least thru the weekend. Reasonable fishing pressure with fair to good numbers of Kings spread from near shore big Lake O waters to upstream fast water spots, in some cases right past anglers not there yet to intercept with a drift. On Saturday there were bass boats fishing on the south side next to the Port Gibson bridge. All that cooler water we have again in the Oak could surely be spreading out the fish and drifts are going to need to be down and slow for best hook up chances. A little stain, something like 2 ft of visibility. We encourage you to do the same with Brookfield, NYSDEC and/or Orleans County Tourism. A good WNW wind thru last night probably moved more fish near shore or into the tribs from Lake Ontario but dont look for those fish to loiter in estuary or rivermouth spots at this point in the season. This will entice more brown trout, steelhead and Atlantic and Pacific salmon to run up these streams, improving conditions for the fish and expanding opportunities for anglers. In the Steelhead Division, Karen Mang of East Concord, NY is top fish catcher with a 16-pound, 12-ounce Olcott fish. Read slightly high and slightly stained with lots of good water cover for steelhead to be anywhere they want to be in the watercourses and good drifting chances. Not sure yet how much of a change in flows in the Oak well see, but with the precip received so far it shouldnt be bad enough for a blow out. Flows in the Oak are slightly high with something now approaching 2 feet of viz. Nights are cooling down tho, even with the current warm day temps and that has at least made for good fishing action early and late. Look for calmer winds on the backside of choppy Lakeshore conditions that leave that semi stained water in range of the pier head and land lubber caster. The only sure way to know is to get out there and make a few drifts! Good drifting and swinging chances there too with warming water temps and the chance for some fresh fish. At least in the turbine channel we can look for some of those fish that wont be taking an overland route, to drop back downstream filling in the fast water gravel sections. Mild winters or short duration cold weather lasting into spring is generally considered good for alewife survival, and hopefully a so far mild winter will bode well for alewife. Theres been some water level fluctuations thanks to hydro power operations already and look for that to continue with almost daily fluctuations expected due to leaf fall or windy conditions. The last 2 days the salmon have moved closer and closer to the rivers. With these colder temps the fish are reasonably hardy, they wont be later on. Our Cannon Downriggers parked at 30 & 40 with spoons back 30 were our hottest setups. Thru this weekend flows are prob more agreeable for better drifts but the water color is worse so there could be tougher action. And maybe into the early spring! Try trolling straight out from Sodus Bay west to Ontario searching for kings down 50 over 150 fow. The temps are returning to seasonably after a few days of a heatwave along with high winds. All our boat ramps are open. There would have been a similar few day high/stained fishable water window in the smaller area tribs too. Slightly lower flows will likely reveal more browns then thought when the water was higher. One guy catches a fish, another guy quick runs the fish over to the turbine channel cradled in a net. Looking out across the water and spotting fish def not as easy as it would be if flows were lower and clearer. Widewaters is never drawn-down and is the hot spot for bass this time of year. There are miles of water for fish to be dropping back from compared to about only a short mile of Oak water. Chance of rain and colder temps and windy conditions for the end of the week but back to relatively mild temps again by the weekend. No lunch will be offered and no fly fishing tourney will be held. To the east look for a quicker turn for lower and clearer flows and doable drifts then to the west. Best spoon is a gold laser spook. Generally the most action has been to the east so thats where most anglers have been heading. Look for some hook-ups by covering that different water and putting in a few hours. Trolling in a west direction was tough as the current was making it difficult. More then likely flows will be on the rise in the near future and hydro managers could bump flows up beforehand in anticipation of higher run of the river flows to come. To the east, like at Sandy Creek, the higher Canal bolstered flows have made for better migration conditions with pods of salmon bolting from the estuary holding water and spreading upstream, along with a few browns mixed in.. First time fishing on Lake Ontario, Meagan Hardner caught this lake trout on spoons trolled within 10 feet of the bottom, in 50-60 feet of water straight out of Oak Orchard. Actually that forecast sounds more normal by November standards. If you mark fish, trying trolling through a few times and get them to bite. We need 2 cookies to store this setting. That flow is still actually fishable unless its high AND dirty. Suspect some pressure has shifted to other area smaller waterways. The forecast ahead thru about the weekend is for colder weather that will drop and clear flows. Early Mar 2022 starting from last fall, thru the winter (weather permitting) and lasting until May! Oh winds could shift it this way and that would mean well get some snow. The other area smaller tribs comparitively to the Oak anyway, have better looking flows at low to mod and slightly stained viz. Other area smaller tribs are dropping back like the Oak to low but may be hanging on to a little more color. Here in the Oak Orchard neighborhood theres something like 18+ inches of a medium dense snow so therell be a good supply of runoff flows when it melts. Water color is real nice at slightly stained 2 ft of visibility so drift chances for now are the best theyve been so far this late winter/early spring period. Concentrate on the faster shires and ruffles as they are more oxygenated. The better reports I hear are from guys that have some Kings migrate past them or hold and they get some drifts to them. So with light angling pressure in the Oak, a few drop backs, spawners and fresh fish have been encountered in the low and clear flows. Temps forecast today in the 40sF and a little bit cooler tomorrow with a chance of rain/snow showers later Wednesday. The weather continues with near record warmth! Alex fished 210-240 feet of water and then deeper in 380-400-foot depths and took a mix of mature kings, two-year old salmon, and steelheads. Seems like the Kings just arent concentrated in any particular fast water spot in any trib and thats the tougher reports I hear from guys. Seasonable cold is forecast to hang in at least thru the week and weekend. New Yorks lakes and streams offer great opportunities for fishing in a wide array of settings across the state. That may well all blow out after this latest round of precipitation. All the water is open to fish with some bank ice here and there in slack water areas. Cormorant numbers, however, remain a significant challenge to all the Lake wide salmonid stocking efforts.
