Now her challenge is to basically approach the top 4. Back in my day, we were accountable for our grades and our parents held us responsible for our performance. Melissa: So Ive read a lot about you and your teams core values, which I am a huge believer in core values. Then he shifted the next slide, to 2012, the year we were in. I just want to answer. I love the accountability of it. That should be your perspective, is your bottom line, and heres the way you construct the most aggressive bottom line. And Ill be honest with you, nothing seemed to work and all of a sudden I am reading this thing out of the New York Times magazine. Melissa: [Laughs.] And he believes in creating community, he believes in treating people exceptionally well. So anyway, we got her to shut up and we made a nice run. Melissa: Yes. And let me tell you something. And now youre ranked from one to 15. And she was telling a great story, and she said when she was at Columbia they just hired a Russian exile poet by the name of Joseph Brodsky. Sam: Coach, I think theres a lot of stuff that any business owner could take from what you just said, especially the getting them to the truth part. But let me tell you what the truth is. And they brought Brodsky in and Brodsky sat down all of his PhD candidates and masters candidates in Russian literature and assigned them all of this Russian literature and poetry to memorize. But talent is just so overwhelmingly tempting. And so thats my main job. But a lot of what goes on, I think, that takes us and our teams to our potential is our capacity to motivate the players that are in our environment. And so often time its not just the training environment thats critical for us, its how we can get into, again, the mindset of the players to get them to change a certain mindset or a narrative thats protecting them from getting to their potential. I think theyre an amazing thing that really sets the tone for a whole organization. Right now were in the heart of the womens World Cup, and this inspired me to learn from elite athletes and coaches to unpack their tips and tricks for building winning cultures. Melissa: So its been fun for me because I went through the process, as I was getting ready for this interview I read about you and I watched some interviews that you gave, and I have to tell you I was positively blown away by your numbers. Thats your job, your job isnt to save people. Our core values are our character. The School of Government depends on private and public support for fulfilling its mission. So what I tried 1 year is I said listen, the press is going to call me next year and theyre going to ask me who my leaders are, and Im going to sort of mention all of your names. Podcasts for me are great. Thats awesome. It is produced basically now because I was the first coach that took the United States from nowhere to the top of the world. Knapp-Sanders Building Then we do it post season in January, and then we do it at the end of the spring as theyre about to go on their summer break. [Laughs.] But also, the other superpower I would love, if I couldnt see the future, was I would love to be able to see an individuals character. But if we started having all of these, you know, kids take the, you know, Angela Duckworth grit test or, you know, some sort of, you know, psychological profile or take my core value test, wed lose them, and the word would get out that, you know, thats how were evaluating them, and it would kill us. And this has served me better than any other piece of advice I have ever been given in leadership and coaching in my life. Now, how did I sort of stumble on this stuff? In fact some are made so clear that on the first day of practice this August, theres some players that arent going to be practicing with us because they failed the initial test to get them into training, which is a beat test which measures their cardiovascular efficiency. But also Id love to be a mind reader. If you gave them a one they rarely lived this core value. And now whats happening is we have all gone to the dogs. And basically what he is trying to tell me. I could feel the love. And my ego after that conversation or soaring like a hawk, she could feel my love. Do you like to talk with a lot of other coaches? And people are thinking about how do I find workers, get them onboarded, develop them, keep them, get them performing. Our values have shaped our culture over many years, and now we just need to illustrate them with some nice quotations for everyone to memorize. I think right now in the corporate world were in a place where weve got so much data, but not yet a lot of insight. One is that I am going to improve by trying to beat everyone to death and every single minute of every single practice, but also the other kids will benefit from that because in order to deal with me, they have to raise their competitive level as well. And we develop such an incredible mentality. Now will this help them change their opinion of you? And one of the things Ive seen recently is that we, in fact we did a study on this and found that 47% of corporate America does not know their organizations core values, which, if you think about it, on one hand is extremely surprising. Because theyve been filled with absolute garbage from their parents and often from their youth coaches. And it changed, it changed her cerebral fabric. So its critical in the player review that we do 3 times a year is you review all the data with them. And then after I had a collision with this player and her family that had me involved in a ten-year lawsuit, a girl I should have cut in the preseason of her freshman year and it would have solved all kinds of problems a couple of years later, when I finally did cut her, Ive now learned it. And so there are two advantages to me, competing in a training environment. And of course you hire Millennials. The program is offered in two formats: on-campus and online. Anson: Because now all of a sudden Im not being critical of them. Everyone is motivated differently and youve got to get to the core of who they are. I want my kids to develop principle-centered living. Thats what we call the competitive ballgame. In this video, you will see and hear how Anson Dorrance has used the 1-3-4-3 and more recently the 1-4-2-3-1 systems to dominate the collegiate field that has shown more and more parity over the years. Melissa: So 2 more quick questions for you. Anson: Well, yeah, because basically Im listening to this guy and hes absolutely right. And then all of a sudden five minutes before the practice session begins a manager of the team comes up and hands us a practice outline of whats going to happen. Because obviously if I want to be protected from the chaos of the universe and Im a player in this environment, who are the people that are going to completely agree with anything you tell them on tell them on the problem? Anson: And this will crack you up. And then we also have them evaluate every teammate on whether or not they were living each core value, and we did it on a 4 point scale, sort of like a GPA, so 4 is obviously a 4.0, its an A average, so 4 is an extraordinary example of this core value. He has won 22 National Championships and is the first coach in NCAA history to win 20 championships coaching a single sport. And my job is to get them to the truth because where do I want them to go? I was just talking to a restaurant owner who was struggling to find the right mix of workers for whatever reason that might be. Part of that is hiring more coaches to do that. So I get all my leaders together. Its not a sort of thing you can lead through a memorandum. And so if they claim they have a 4.5 in the beat, which is professional level in terms of cardiovascular fitness, and yet their beat score was a 30, and the qualifying line to get on the field is 40, I will debate it with them. Anson: And you speak to a parent, you know, theyre doing the same thing. You cared about me and you still care about me. And in the old days I never shared any of this data with any of my kids. The professor had some literature that I found so powerful that I now use it with my team. At the end of that exercise or drill or game or race or this or that, or the other thing, everyone is ranked. And in preparation for making the presentation, one of my athletic directors, Rick Steinbacher gave me a book he wrote called Good Company. And of course hes nodding and hes not contradicting anyone. Yes, dont just be a leader in the business world, be a leader in your local community, certainly a leader in your family. Most certainly. But when you talk to your mom youre claiming that you are, so like, you know, Mom, I cant believe it, you know, Im kicking everyones rear end in practice, and Im just not given a chance at the game. So we stole this idea, we soccer-ized it, we took it to a new level. So thats one of the functions that has made all the difference in the world, but its not in my opinion the most important one. Anson: Well, actually, Im reading all the time, but most of the ideas we bring in practice dont come directly from the reading, they just come from us looking at this thinking you know what, this isnt working. The most important thing is what I just addressed. Because as long as every kid I coach has an excuse for why they dont start or play or travel, they will never be able to change their place. They are sprinting all over the place going from one session to the other, there was no break. I mean, hes incredibly demanding and yet you can feel his love for you. They want to be considered excellent for desiring to be held exempt from all accountability. Now thats typical of the Millennials. So heres the advantage of this. In fact the Lady Tar Heels have won 22 of the 36 NCAA soccer championships. And as a woman you can understand the huge perils of deconstructing a womans confidence. And then she said, and this is a wonderful backhand compliment, she said, you know, after I played for you, I felt like a play for anyone. So basically thats the construction of our player conference, which takes me out of the subjective mode. Every so often, I pull out his 12 Core Values. Other values are more inspiringthe truly extraordinary do something every day, we choose to be positive, and we care about each other as teammates and as human beings. What are our core values? So now what I do, if theyre below that black line, I meet with them, I talk about how wonderful it would be for them to transfer to Stanford and destroy their program. Sam: Last question for you. Anson: We have to do it, yeah, cause, you know, it destroys everything, you know, teams, companies. Melissa: So you talked a lot about trial and error. And so what is critical is, you know, who we end up recruiting. And then she doesnt feel inferior, because she knows the top 4 are extraordinary. So this is where were trying to drive them. And usually it blames someone else. And even though, basically I made the presentation to him and his and this is executive staff like Ive made to your listeners, I learned more reading that book, and what I loved about it is getting back to the principle of loving those you lead, loving those you coach, loving those you, teach because he clearly does. One of the toughest things with women is to get them to lead verbally, because what every woman in the room understands, as soon as a woman leader opens her mouth everyones going to think shes a bitch. Be an incredibly positive life force. Ive never developed a leader. And it was just extraordinary. He was the first coach in NCAA history to win 20 championships coaching a single sport. And what protects them from all accountability? And here it is. Anson: Then I dont have to prepareyeah, I dont want to prepare a speech. I am the person that can help them do better with the data. But she said basically between your criticism, I could feel your love. And we had alerts towards authoritarianism, and it was Donald Trump. And honestly, I knew that what you had to do with them, like your culture, wants to get people to do extraordinary things, to live the culture. By the end of the season, weve got a cauldron rank in every single practice for the entire year, and it dictates where youre going to go. Here is the problem, especially now in our modern culture. But now honestly. And Im looking at this thinking, you know, well this is all Ive done my whole life. So the review we have with them after weve looked at all the data is we want to rank them, and they rank themselves in these categories: self-discipline, competitive fire, self-belief, love of the ball, love of playing the game, love of watching the game, grit and coachability.
